Locksmith in Clarington, OntarioWinter is hardon locks. We know.

Freeze-thaw swells doors, road salt eats at brass, and a cylinder that was fine in October seizes in February. We free jammed locks without forcing them, adjust doors that have shifted, and use lubricants that stay workable well below zero.

From the shop

Locks for the house you actually live in.

The door and the lock are one system, and we look at both. A deadbolt that has to be shoved home is usually a hinge or a swollen frame, not a bad lock. A latch that does not catch is often a strike that drifted a few millimetres.

Every kind of lock, one call

Choosing a service is easier when you know what each one actually changes. Rekeying changes the key, replacement changes the hardware, repair keeps what you have working, and installation adds something new. The sections below sort our work along those lines.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Moving is the most common reason people call about their home. Nobody knows who has a copy of the key that came in the envelope.

  1. A silver-colored deadbolt set in clear packaging with two keys resting on the countertop in front. — Lock Rekeying, Clarington
Lock RekeyingEvery copy of your house key seems to work a little differently. One needs a jiggle, another sticks halfway, and the original wore down years ago.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Clarington
Deadbolt InstallationThe back door has a deadbolt in name only: a short bolt, a thin brass strike held by two little screws, and a jamb you can flex with your palm. It was fine for a builder's showing.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Clarington
Lock Replacement & UpgradeThe brass handleset has gone blotchy and green where the winter salt reaches it, and the coating on the deadbolt is lifting in flakes. It still locks, but it looks tired beside the fresh paint on the door.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Clarington
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceThe knob flops loose on its spindle and never springs back to level. When you turn it the latch pulls in, but you have to push the knob back yourself, and lately the latch has started staying inside the door instead of…
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Clarington
Smart Lock InstallationArthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Clarington
Gate & Building Entry LocksThe gate to the side yard used to close with a satisfying click. After a winter of frost heaving the fence post, the latch now sits a full inch below where the strike is waiting for it, and the gate swings free no…
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Clarington
Mailbox Lock ReplacementThe key still turns, but lately it spins a half-circle further than it used to before the little door lets go, and some mornings it takes a second try. The small cam lock inside is simply worn out.

Access control does not have to mean a control room. For a small office it can be a single keypad on the staff door with a code that changes whenever a staff member moves on.

High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

Which fix fits?

The padlock on the back gate has rusted shut. The usual fix

UsuallyReplace it with a weather-rated padlock.

WhyA shrouded shackle and a drainage-friendly body cope with rain and salt far better than an indoor lock left outside.

The shed holds the bikes and the lock is a flimsy one.The usual fix

WhyThe hasp matters as much as the lock; fitted with carriage bolts it resists prying.

How a visit goes

A deadbolt installation is also the moment to sort out keys. The new cylinder can be pinned to match the key you already use, so the household stays on one key, or set to a fresh key if you would rather retire whatever copies are in circulation.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.

    Verifying the caller

We ask for something that ties you to the premises: a lease, business card, or a call to the owner. Opening a shop for the wrong person is not a risk we take.

  2. 2 of 3

    Getting the door open

Storefront and office locks vary, so we choose the approach that leaves the hardware intact wherever possible. If the lock itself has failed, we tell you before opening it.

  3. 3 of 3

    Getting you back to trading

Once inside we check the lock, cut keys if needed and note anything that should be addressed later so your day can carry on.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 27%Newer homes

About 27% of homes in Clarington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

New construction settles in its first years, and a door that closed perfectly at move-in can begin to catch as the frame finds its final position. A locksmith visiting a newer home adjusts strikes and hinges so the bolt throws freely again.

  • 78%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 78% of homes in Clarington (2021 Census).

Detached houses collect hardware from every renovation. A locksmith visiting one often finds three keyways, two finishes and one door that never latched right. Sorting all of that into a consistent, working set is a satisfying afternoon's work.

Asked and answered

How long should the bolt be?

The bolt should extend at least 25 mm into the frame, which is the standard throw for a dwelling's entrance doors and the length most residential deadbolts provide. Part of the bolt stays inside the door for support while the rest sits in the pocket. A hardened steel insert that spins under a saw blade is a common feature worth having on doors that face a street or laneway.

How long does a deadbolt installation take?

A replacement into existing holes is generally the shorter visit, and boring a fresh door with a new strike takes longer, roughly an hour or two per door including the frame work and testing. Steel doors, keying alike, frame repairs after a forced entry and fitting a jamb reinforcer each add time. The locksmith can give a realistic estimate once the door and frame have been looked at.

What should I have ready before the locksmith arrives?

Know which doors you want bolted, what they are made of, and whether each already has a deadbolt or only a knob. A photo of the door face and edge helps. Have any existing keys to hand, decide whether you want everything on one key, and mention glass near the lock, a storm door in the same opening, or a rental agreement. If you have already bought hardware, keep the box and template together.

Do I need to replace my whole deadbolt or just the cylinder?

It depends on what you have. If the deadbolt is a good heavy unit that throws a full inch into a proper strike, a high security cylinder can replace the ordinary one and the rest stays. If the deadbolt is light, worn or throws a short bolt, a new graded deadbolt with a hardened bolt is the sensible base and the high security cylinder goes into that. The assessment tells you which, door by door.
