High Security Locks

A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

High Security Locks

In plain words

Think of the upgrade as four layers working together. The cylinder resists picking, bumping and drilling. The deadbolt resists sawing and kicking with a long, hardened bolt. The strike and screws keep the frame from splitting when the door is struck. And the key control stops copies being made without your say-so. A locksmith assesses your door for each layer and tells you where it is weak, because a strong cylinder screwed into a soft frame gains you little. Most homes end up with a graded deadbolt and a patented cylinder; businesses often step up to laboratory-rated cylinders and heavier lock bodies.

Sound familiar?

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

How the visit goes

How the visit goes

  1. Matching the rating to the risk

Ratings are only useful if someone explains them. A residential deadbolt carries a hardware grade for security, durability and finish based on hammer blows, pulling force and cycle testing. A high-security cylinder carries a separate laboratory listing based on how many minutes it resists picking, drilling and forcing. The locksmith explains what each figure means in practice for your door and points out the rule that matters most: the whole assembly takes the grade of its weakest part. That conversation ends with a recommendation you understand rather than a part number you have to trust.

  2. Fitting a heavier deadbolt

When the existing deadbolt is light or worn, the locksmith fits a graded deadbolt through the same bore where possible. The bolt throws a full inch and carries a hardened steel pin that turns under a saw blade, and the housing keeps part of the bolt supported against a kick. The latch is set in the edge bore with the correct backset, the exterior housing and interior thumb-turn are joined through the door with the long screws, and the final tightening is done by hand so nothing strips. The bolt is then thrown with the door open and closed to confirm it extends completely.

  3. A key plan that survives staff changes

For a business, the handover includes a key schedule showing every cylinder, every key number and who holds it. When someone leaves, their key comes back and is struck off; if it does not come back, you know exactly which doors it opened and can decide whether one cylinder or several should be repinned. Because the keyway is restricted, a departed employee cannot quietly keep a copy. New hires are issued a numbered key against a signature. The plan lives in a folder or spreadsheet, and the locksmith keeps a matching record so the two can be reconciled whenever you like.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Cylinder only or full deadbolt

Swapping the cylinder inside a sound deadbolt is a smaller job than fitting a new graded deadbolt through the door, and a knob-only door that needs a fresh bore is bigger again.

  2. 2Documentation and registration

Setting up the key register, recording signatories and providing a written schedule of cylinders and keys is real work on a business system and is listed rather than hidden.

  3. 3Condition of the door itself

A solid door that hangs true takes hardware straight away. A dropped, swollen or hollow door may need hinge work, shimming or a recommendation to replace the slab before the lock is worth fitting.

High Security Locks: questions

Do I need to replace my whole deadbolt or just the cylinder?

It depends on what you have. If the deadbolt is a good heavy unit that throws a full inch into a proper strike, a high security cylinder can replace the ordinary one and the rest stays. If the deadbolt is light, worn or throws a short bolt, a new graded deadbolt with a hardened bolt is the sensible base and the high security cylinder goes into that. The assessment tells you which, door by door.

What should I do when a controlled key is lost?

Tell your locksmith so the register is updated, then decide together what the loss means. If the key was lost with nothing identifying your address, the practical risk is low and many people simply strike it off. If it went missing with identification or from a known person, the affected cylinders can be repinned so that key stops working while the rest of the system continues. Because the keyway is controlled, you know that no further copies exist.

How long does the installation take?

A cylinder swap with new keys on one door is a short visit. A new deadbolt, reinforced strike and frame repair takes longer, and several doors keyed to a plan take longer again, mostly in bench time pinning cylinders. The locksmith gives you a realistic estimate once the doors have been looked at, because the frame condition and the door preparation matter more than the count of locks alone.
